AVG Nation Toolbar
Many of you have already spotted latest update of AVG Toolbar and Secure Search which is now called AVG Nation Toolbar. The main and most visible change is the new name and branding. However we’ve also made improvements to the detection of dangerous webpages and to the AVG Do Not Track feature which allows you to control your internet privacy. You can see the update notice below. We also recommend reading through this blog post where you can find more details about this update.
Click OK to install it or Decline the update to stop the installation and close the pop-up. Your Firewall may ask you whether to allow the AVG-Secure-Search-Update-0913b.exe (name may slightly vary). Please allow it if you want to install this update.
Follow the How to uninstall AVG Nation search, homepage and toolbar from your browser article if you don’t like this update and want to remove the AVG Nation Toolbar completely.
New apps for Android
We would like to introduce new AVG applications for your AndroidTM smartphones and tablets!
For daily use is Alarm Clock Xtreme which is more than just a basic alarm clock. Have it wake you up gently (slowly increasing volume), or have the snooze duration decrease after every snooze and you can even set a maximum number of snoozes. There are also other cool features such as “math quiz” or timer. You can find out more and download Alarm Clock Xtreme on Google Play.
The other useful app is AndroZip™ which is the #1 ZIP (archiving) application. You can compress/decompress ZIP, encrypted ZIP, RAR, TAR, GZIP and BZIP2 archives as well as send them via e-mail directly from the app. Go to Google Play and download it today.
There are more interesting and useful AVG apps to check out. You can find them here and here.
Rootkits detected after upgrade
Recently, a few AVG users reported unknown rootkit infections on files such as atapi.sys, pci.sys, ntfs.sys or spqr.sys (name may vary) after updating to AVG 2014. Rootkit techniques can be used by legitimate applications for various purposes (e.g. copy protection).
If you’re experiencing this issue, we highly recommend updating STPD driver (this driver is used by virtual drives as well as applications pre-installed by computer manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, …), operating system, applications and drivers to the latest available versions to prevent possible false detections and compatibility issues.
However we also recommend thoroughly checking your system with AVG. For more information about rootkits and how to remove them, visit the following articles:

AVG Anti-Theft service
The AVG Anti-Theft service is designed to help and support AVG AntiVirus for Android users in case their mobile device is lost or stolen. This feature needs to be registered and requires an active internet connection on your device. It is possible to remotely Locate, Wipe, Shout or Lock your device through the Remote Management web interface then. Camera Trap also discreetly emails you a photo of anyone who enters three wrong passwords when trying to unlock your phone.
Core AVG products such as AVG AntiVirus and AVG PC TuneUp need to be activated with the license number. There are few common mistakes which may lead to unsuccessful installations. Here are a few tips on how to activate your AVG smoothly and without any complications.
- Make sure you have the latest and complete license number. You can find it in your mailbox or inside the box with installation disc. Go to http://www.avg.com/lost if you can’t find it or not sure.
- Copy&Paste license from your mailbox or transcribe it carefully from the box.
- Make sure there are no spaces or other characters before or after the license number.
- Click Activate to start enjoying your AVG.
