These days we take our mobile devices with us everywhere. What we may not realize, however is that as we move around cities and shopping malls, our devices are constantly searching for Wi-Fi connections everywhere we go. Have ever wondered why your battery declines faster when you are on the subway or the tube?
This can be very handy, connecting to free Wi-Fi in a café means we can enjoy the very best of the web from our mobile devices without great bandwidth and no data charges. But our devices are searching for connections everywhere even when we aren’t using them, this of course means the device is using valuable battery life looking for networks that you are not even close to
Some companies see this as an opportunity because when you stroll through a mall, your devices are constantly checking Wi-Fi points to see if there is a known viable connection. When mapped out, this data can form a sort of timeline that details our movements around a certain area. Retailers could then use this information to target us with ads and analyze consumer habits.
At AVG, we firmly believe that privacy should be a choice and that users should be firmly in control of when and with whom they share their data and location.
That’s why AVG Innovation Labs has developed AVG Wi-Fi Assistant, which is available in beta for free download from the Google PlayTM Store.
AVG Wi-Fi Assistant automatically manages your wireless connection and turns it on/off as you come near or move away from Wi-Fi hotspots you’ve previously connected to or have in your trusted list, so that your Wi-Fi is only enabled when you want to use it.
