He’s a jolly fellow with the best of intentions, but with millions of smartphones and tablets to give out this Christmas he can’t do everything – and that includes making sure your new device is configured securely and with your privacy in mind.

No. 1 – Set up your PIN or Passcode

Having a PIN or Passcode configured on your mobile device is really important – you’ll never get to choose when you might lose your shiny new gadget or when it might get stolen.  Having it locked means nobody can steal your private information or hijack online accounts.

No. 2 – Turn off In-App purchases

There are many Apps that pretend to be free up-front, but later insist on In-App purchases.  This can cause a problem especially when you have children using your mobile device – so make sure you disable In-App purchases to avoid that nasty post-Christmas bill shock.

No. 3 – Fix your Privacy with PrivacyFix

Mobile devices are great for snapping photos and tagging friends in compromising situations or accidentally giving up your secret fishing spot – so make sure you configure your Privacy settings on sites like Facebook, Google and LinkedIn – the best way to do that is by installing AVG PrivacyFix.

No. 4 – Install a lost device finder app

On New Year’s day when you’re recovering from that big night out there’s one technology that will help you find your smartphone or tablet amid the party debris – for iOS users install the “Find my iPhone/iPad” app, and for Android users install AVG AntiVirus for Android to ensure you can track the location of your devices if they are lost or stolen.

No. 5 – Protect from mobile Malware

If your new gadget is an Android device, pay special attention to the risks of Malicious applications and make sure you only download Apps from a trusted marketplace, usually the Google Play store.  Install AVG AntiVirus for Android so you can keep an eye on all your Apps.

No. 6 – Keep your gadget running smoothly

With the size of Apps constantly expanding, and all the other things like Photos and Video that will take up space it’s important to keep your Android device free of clutter – install AVG Cleaner for Android to automatically keep it running smoothly – well, until at least next Christmas when Santa upgrades you the latest model!

Until next time, stay safe out there.
